A city of boats, hotels and small shops
Marinas, boatyards and charter companies keep a large part of the city busy. So do hotels and restaurants along the beach and Las Olas, the airport and the cruise port, and a long list of small businesses that serve all of them. A lot of that work is part-time, seasonal or paid on a 1099, and not all of it comes with benefits.
If you crew boats, work in a kitchen or on a hotel floor, or run your own small business, you may be shopping for a plan on your own. A private plan is one option to compare. It is a plan you apply for yourself, directly with a carrier.
Seasons, storms and schedules that do not match the clock
Tourism has its busy months and its quiet ones. Boat show season can bring short-term crew and vendor work. Hurricane season can pause work for days. A health plan bills every month through all of it, so look at more than the monthly payment. Compare the deductible, which is what you pay for care before the plan starts sharing costs, the copays, and the out-of-pocket maximum, which is the most you could pay for covered care in a plan year.
If your work takes you offshore or out of state, ask where the plan's network reaches. Some plans reach outside Florida and some do not. And since service shifts rarely end at five o'clock, note that our office is open on weekday evenings and on weekends too.
From Victoria Park to Coral Ridge, from the beach to Flagler Village
Whether you live in Victoria Park, Rio Vista, Flagler Village, Coral Ridge, Edgewood or near the beach, you do not need to travel to see an advisor. Your advisor can work with you by phone, WhatsApp or video. If you prefer to sit across a desk, our Sunrise office is nearby. It is our only office, and the third floor is staffed during office hours.
This page is about Fort Lauderdale itself. If you live elsewhere in the county, see our Broward County page.
What to know about private plans
Our plans are PPO plans. A PPO (preferred provider organization) has a network of doctors and hospitals it prefers you use, and staying in network usually costs less. Our plans are private and medically underwritten, not ACA Marketplace plans.
Private plans are medically underwritten. The carrier asks about your health on the application and may approve you, decline you, or exclude certain conditions. Plans have exclusions and limitations and may not cover every benefit. They are for people under 65, and they tend to fit people in reasonably good health. Answer every question truthfully. If a private plan is not a fit, we will tell you.
If you own a restaurant, a charter business or a shop
If you have employees, we can also talk about employer-sponsored plans for your team, and about your own plan in the same call.
