Why should I check an insurance agent's license?
Under Florida law, nobody may act as, advertise as, or present themselves as an insurance agent without a current license from the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS) and an appointment from an insurance company or other proper appointing entity. An appointment is the insurer's authorization for that agent to sell its products. DFS also says that all individual licenses require an appointment.
Knowingly selling insurance in Florida without the required license, or knowingly helping someone do so, is a third-degree felony under section 626.112 of the Florida Statutes. That is how seriously the state takes it.
For you, the point is practical. A licensed agent has met state requirements and can be held to state rules. An unlicensed person has not, and the state has no hold on them. The check takes a few minutes, and you can do it before you share any personal or payment details.
