What is the difference between Marketplace plans and private plans outside the Marketplace?
Marketplace plans are individual health plans you buy through the Health Insurance Marketplace. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) created it. In Florida, the Marketplace is run by the federal government at HealthCare.gov.
Private plans outside the Marketplace are plans you buy directly from an insurer or through a licensed agent instead. Marketplace plans are also offered by private insurance companies, so the real difference is where you buy the plan and which rules apply to it. They are not Marketplace plans, so different rules apply, and those rules also differ from one plan type to the next. A short-term plan, for example, is a different kind of product from other private plans.
This article explains how the two routes work. It does not tell you which to pick. Prime Health Consultants (PHC) offers private plans only and cannot enroll anyone in a Marketplace plan. For Marketplace questions, HealthCare.gov is the right place to go.
